My name is Toinette Laguerre. My husband, Jacques Laguerre, and Kim Jamison have volunteered to coach the MRMS girls’ tennis team for the 2023 fall season. We are new to this role and are the parents of two returning team members, Clara Jamison and Raquelle Laguerre. We are very excited to coach and continue the legacy of team spirit and high level competition for the Mavericks Middle School girls tennis team. We apologize for the lack of correspondence as we are just receiving access to the roster through the familyid portal. Nevertheless, we would like to update you about the upcoming tryouts that are scheduled for next week.

You are receiving this email based on your athletic registration for MRMS girls’ tennis. Keep in mind that you will not be allowed to tryout if you have not completed registration.  If you are no longer planning to try out for the team, please respond to this email directly by 12pm on Monday so that we have an accurate headcount for team try-outs. As many of you may know, the tennis courts for Marvin Ridge Middle are undergoing a renovation. The courts are scheduled to be completed on August 7th. In the interim, we are fortunate enough to be able to use the tennis courts at Firethorne for our tryouts. The address is 1057 Spyglass Lane, Waxhaw, NC.

Team Try Outs:

• This is a reminder that team try-outs are scheduled for this Monday, July 24th through Wednesday, July 26th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm each day. Twelve players will make the team.

• The game format during tryouts will be 10-point tiebreakers. Total points won during each game will be tallied.

• A combination of match wins and total points will be the primary criteria used to select the team. Sportsmanship, honesty, integrity, and teamwork are also important factors.

• Each player will have an opportunity to showcase their skills. The specific number of games played during tryouts will be determined by the number of players trying out and the competitive nature of their matches.

• Each of the girls will receive a number. We will use these numbers to post those who will continue to try out on the next day on our team website Tennis MS Girls (gomavericks.org) by 9pm each night.

• Final team roster will be posted on the website and a personal email sent by 9am on Thursday, July 27th.

• The MRMS Tennis team has been very competitive over the years. Last year roughly 1 in 4 who tried out made the team. Many of last year's team members will be trying out again this year. This is not meant to deter any new tennis players, however our goal is to set your expectations regarding the level of expected competition at tryouts. There is an expectation that athletes will know the basic rules of the game, how to keep score and be good sports. We aspire to make the tryout process a great experience.

When to Arrive / What to Bring:

• Please arrive between 4:45-5:00 pm each day. We will start playing at 5:00 PM sharp.

• Athletic or tennis wear is highly suggested, including a visor and court appropriate shoes.

• Bring lots of Water / Water Bottle – we will have extra for those who need it. It is going to be hot.

• Personal tennis racket and sweat towel. We will provide new tennis balls.

Parents – we respectively ask that you not stay and watch the girls try out. Tryouts are inherently stressful enough and we want to maintain a positive and enjoyable environment for the girls to showcase their skills.

We will have a tent set up for check in and shade for the girls between matches.

Important Dates to Remember:

· First practice is scheduled for August 8/8/23.

· Team spirit wear store link will be sent out around TBA.

· Campus beautification day (mandatory) for the team is on Saturday TBA.

· First match is 8/21/23 against Cuthbertson and Weddington, doubles.

We are excited to meet each of the girls next week and look forward to a fun and exciting 2022 fall tennis season!
